Overcoming Lighting and Composition Challenges in Rainforest Photography. One day while doing a photography assignment in Costa Rica, I found myself surrounded by dense rainforest greenery. Every direction I looked was filled with vines, leaves, and tangled branches, making it almost impossible to isolate my subject. The canopy overhead blocked natural sunlight, creating uneven lighting and harsh shadows that made composing a clean image extremely challenging.

In my experience as a Costa Rica photographer, the key is patience and observation. I began looking for natural frames within the forest, small gaps in the foliage where light broke through, and any vibrant colors that could help draw attention to my subject. Often, I had to wait for the right moment when a bird or flower moved into the perfect patch of sunlight to make the shot work.

My advice? Don’t attempt to capture everything at once. Focus on simplifying the scene, isolating one subject at a time, and using the environment creatively. Based on my experience, doing photography in Costa Rica is not just about having the right lens; it’s about learning to work with the environment and turn the dense rainforest into a stage for compelling imagery.
