Alajuela Photography: Volcanoes and Coffee Plantations Through My Lens

Documenting Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna waterfalls & coffee plantations. Expert insights on volcanic landscapes and cloud forest light.

Alajuela Province: Volcanoes & Coffee Culture

Alajuela province is where I’ve spent countless days photographing volcanic landscapes and agricultural stories. Arenal Volcano Costa Rica and the surrounding La Fortuna Costa Rica area offer some of the country’s most iconic imagery. The perfectly conical volcano, hot springs, and adventure activities make La Fortuna a hub for editorial and commercial photography. Hotels in La Fortuna Costa Rica range from boutique properties to luxury resorts, I’ve photographed many for their marketing materials.

Poás Volcano (Volcán Poás Costa Rica or Poas Costa Rica) features an active crater with a stunning blue-green lagoon that creates otherworldly photographic conditions. The sulfurous gases and ever-changing light challenge even experienced photographers. The best light typically occurs early morning, though weather can be unpredictable.

On the volcano’s fertile slopes sits Doka Estate, one of Costa Rica’s premier coffee plantations. I, as Costa Rica Photographer, have documented the entire coffee production process here, from harvesting and processing to roasting. The morning light filtering through coffee plants creates magical conditions for agricultural photography.

La Fortuna Waterfall Costa Rica is a popular subject, though capturing it originally requires patience and timing to avoid crowds. The San Jose to La Fortuna journey (about 3 hours) passes through varied landscapes worth documenting.

The Sarapiquí Valley (Sarapiqui Costa Rica or Sarapiqui) to the north offers rainforest photography opportunities and access to colonial-era plantations. I’ve photographed chocolate production, tropical agriculture, and river ecosystems here.
