San José Photography: Urban Stories and Central Valley Culture

Capturing the capital's markets, architecture & culture. From Central Valley coffee towns to urban stories in Chepe's streets.

San José & Central Valley Costa Rica

San José Costa Rica serves as the capital and my base of operations. While many dismiss “Chepe” (as locals call it) as merely a transit hub, I’ve spent years uncovering its photographic potential. The 19th-century architecture downtown provides rich material for architectural photography, particularly the National Theatre, modeled after Paris’s Palais Garnier, with its ornate interiors and dramatic lighting. Tours of the upper levels cost around ₡3,500 (approximately $8), offering access to stunning details rarely photographed.

As Costa Rica Photographer, the Central Market is a goldmine for food photography and documentary work. I’ve captured countless stories here, from vendors preparing hot, handmade chorreada (a traditional corn, milk, and sugar snack wrapped in banana leaf) to the bustling morning trade. The colors, textures, and human connections make this one of my favorite locations for editorial assignments.

La Sabana Metropolitan Park, known as “the lungs of San José,” offers surprising urban nature photography opportunities. I’ve photographed everything from morning joggers and weekend football matches to concerts and cultural events here.

The broader Central Valley Costa Rica region includes charming towns perfect for lifestyle and editorial photography:

  • Escazú Costa Rica and Santa Ana Costa Rica: Upscale communities with modern architecture and international cuisine, ideal for commercial and food photography
  • Heredia Costa Rica: Built on the historic Villa Vieja settlement (founded 1707), offering colonial architecture and university culture
  • Alajuela Costa Rica and Alajuela city: Gateway to the volcanic region, with coffee culture and mountain views
  • Atenas Costa Rica: Consistently ranked as having one of the world’s best climates
  • Sarchi Costa Rica (or Sarchi): Famous for handcrafted oxcarts, I’ve documented artisan workshops here for multiple editorial features
