Puntarenas Photography: From Nicoya Blue Zone to Osa Wilderness

Documenting Costa Rica's longest coast, from whale migrations to remote jungle biodiversity.

Puntarenas Province: Pacific Coast Diversity

Puntarenas Costa Rica province stretches along the Pacific coast and includes some of Costa Rica‘s most photographed destinations.

The Nicoya Peninsula Costa Rica is one of the world’s six “Blue Zones”, regions where people live longer, healthier lives. I’ve documented several editorial features on families near Manzanillo Costa Rica and other communities, capturing their traditional lifestyles, agricultural practices (growing mangos, papaya, watermelon), and multigenerational family stories. This area offers rich opportunities for photographers in Costa Rica looking for documentary and lifestyle photography.

Montezuma Costa Rica (Playa Montezuma, Montezuma Beach) is a bohemian beach town with waterfalls, tide pools, and a creative community. The dramatic coastline and artistic vibe make it popular for editorial features.

Central Pacific Coast destinations I regularly photograph:

Jacó Costa Rica (Jaco Costa Rica, Jaco CR, Jaco Beach Costa Rica, Jaco Beach, Playa Jaco Costa Rica, Playa Jaco) is the closest beach town to San José (about 2 hours). The San Jose to Jaco route is well-traveled. While more developed and touristy, Jacó offers consistent surf, nightlife, and varied commercial photography opportunities.

Quepos Costa Rica (Quepos) serves as gateway to Manuel Antonio Costa Rica, one of the country’s most visited national parks. The combination of beaches and wildlife makes this area ideal for travel features. However, photographing here requires patience due to crowds.

Los Suenos resort and marina near Jacó is a luxury development I’ve photographed for hospitality and sport fishing clients. The costa rica sport fishing industry here is world-class.

Uvita Costa Rica and Uvita Beach are home to Marino Ballena National Park, where humpback and pilot whales congregate seasonally (December to April and July to November). I’ve spent many days photographing these marine mammals. The park’s whale-tail-shaped sandbar creates unique aerial photography opportunities.

Dominical Costa Rica and Dominical Beach Costa Rica offer powerful surf breaks and a relaxed vibe, popular with surfers and nature lovers.

The Osa Peninsula Costa Rica (Osa Costa Rica) in the far south contains some of the most biologically rich areas on Earth. Corcovado National Park is often called “the most biologically intense place on Earth,” condensing 2.5% of the planet’s biodiversity into a relatively small area.

The Osa Peninsula region is one of the best places in Costa Rica to photograph all four monkey species, howler, white-faced, squirrel, and spider monkeys. I’ve spent extended periods here documenting wildlife for conservation organizations and editorial clients. The monkeys in Costa rica are remarkably diverse, but seeing all four species in one location is special.

Puerto Jiménez Costa Rica (Puerto Jimenez) is the main entry point, a former gold-prospecting settlement that’s evolved into an eco-tourism hub. The town itself offers documentary photography opportunities, capturing the transition from resource extraction to conservation-based economy.

Other Osa locations I’ve photographed include:

  • Matapalo Costa Rica (Playa Matapalo, Playa Matapalo Costa Rica): Remote beaches with powerful surf
  • Ojochal Costa Rica: International culinary destination, I’ve photographed restaurants for food features
  • Pavones Costa Rica: Legendary left-hand surf break
  • Golfito Costa Rica: Former banana port with interesting architectural and cultural history

Tortuga Island Costa Rica (Tortuga Costa Rica) and Punta Leona Costa Rica offer tropical island and beach photography opportunities.

Offshore, Cocos Island National Park (Coco Island Costa Rica) sits 500 km from the port. This remote archipelago is ranked among the world’s best dive destinations for photographing hammerhead and whale sharks. I’ve shared stories with people who made several expeditions here for underwater and conservation photography, the logistics are challenging but the photographic rewards are extraordinary.
