Limón Photography: Caribbean Coast Culture and Rainforest Stories Through a Local Lens

Caribbean coast culture, Tortuguero canals & Afro-Caribbean heritage. Documenting the unique identity of Costa Rica's eastern province.

Limón Province: Caribbean Coast Culture

Limón Costa Rica (Limon Costa Rica, Puerto Limón Costa Rica) borders the Caribbean Sea and exhibits pronounced West Indian cultural influence. English is commonly the first language here, and the Afro-Caribbean culture creates a distinctly different atmosphere from the Pacific side.

Cahuita Costa Rica (Cahuita) offers strong Caribbean vibes, reggae music, jerk chicken, and caster-sugar fine sand beaches. I’ve photographed food features and cultural stories here that showcase this unique Costa Rican identity. The national park attached to the town provides excellent wildlife photography opportunities.

Puerto Viejo Costa Rica is the main hub of Caribbean beach culture. Nearby beaches include:

  • Playa Cocles: Popular surf spot with consistent waves
  • Punta Uva Costa Rica (Punta Uva): Stunning turquoise waters and pristine beaches
  • Manzanillo Costa Rica: Remote fishing village at the end of the coastal road

The northern Caribbean coast hosts Tortuguero Costa Rica (Costa Rica Tortuguero), the most important nesting site in the western Atlantic for endangered green turtles. Accessible only by boat or plane, Tortuguero’s canals and rainforest create unique photographic conditions. I’ve documented multiple turtle nesting seasons here for conservation publications.

In the mountainous jungle interior, Pacuaré Lodge offers a unique photography experience, it’s accessible only by white-water rafting through river rapids. I’ve photographed this property for luxury travel features, capturing both the adventure access and the remote jungle setting.
