Documentary London Photography

London is a city full of history, diversity, and charm. In the summer of 2016, I started a documentary London photography project to explore its multicultural identity. At the same time, I attended a Magnum Photos summer course that shaped how I documented the city. Guided by renowned photographers, I uncovered the essence of a city where the world comes together.

Exploring Multicultural London with My Canon 6D.

For this project, I used my Canon 6D and two lenses: a 35mm f/1.4 and an 85mm f/1.2. These lenses aren’t typical for street photography, but sometimes you need to focus on capturing the moment instead of worrying about gear. The 35mm lens helped me frame dynamic street scenes, while the 85mm was perfect for isolating details. This combination allowed me to adapt quickly and capture London’s vibrant diversity.

A Unique Opportunity: Learning from Magnum Photographers.

This project wasn’t just about taking pictures; it was part of a Magnum Photos course called Refining Your Practice. During the course, I had the privilege of learning from Stuart Franklin, Chris Steele-Perkins, and Matt Stuart. Their advice transformed how I approached documentary photography.

Stuart Franklin, renowned for his iconic work during the Tiananmen Square protests, emphasized the importance of capturing the human element in every frame. Chris Steele-Perkins inspired me to document cultural diversity with depth and respect like he did on The Teds, while Matt Stuart showed me how humor and curiosity can elevate everyday scenes into extraordinary narratives like he shows on his book All That Life Can Afford. Their guidance shaped how I approached London’s multicultural neighborhoods with my camera.

Capturing the Multicultural Heart of London.

London’s neighborhoods are full of life and surprises. Walking through areas like Camden and Brick Lane, I found endless inspiration. The streets were alive with the smell of spices, the sound of different languages, and the energy of people living their lives. Street performers, bustling markets, and lively cafés all added to the city’s incredible diversity.

Documentary photography is all about real, unposed moments. It captures life as it happens, showing people and places authentically. In London, every corner told a story. My Canon 6D helped me document the city’s multicultural energy, proving that photography is about the vision, not just the equipment.
